Their World, July 2014

And I thought that June was busy!

In July we:

  • hosted a Canada Day party for 22 people
  • enjoyed the last bit of our time with Nana and Papa
  • had a packed 8 day visit from my sister and her family (geocaching, ice cream shoppe, the Ottawa Beer Market, a tour of the Cold War Museum at the Diefenbunker, the Science Museum, POUTINE, the Museum of History & Children's Museum, the Mosaika light show on Parliament Hill, along with park visits, bike rides... see? PACKED.)
  • watched LOTS of soccer... so sad that Argentina lost.
  • travelled down to Rochester, NY, to visit the Strong's Museum of Play, see a movie, do some shopping (including the Lego Store!), visit the Rochester Science Museum, and hit up a Wegman's to drool over their selection of gluten free foods
  • spent three fun-filled days with Peter's brother and his family at our sister-in-law's family farm/pond, located right next to one of NY beautiful state parks
We also swam with friends, went to parks/splash pads, had fun rock climbing and racing through bouncing houses/slides at les Jeux de la Francophonie Canadienne, climbed fences to watch trains go by, and cheered Peter on (from a distance) as he ran a 26km Spartan Race. In addition to that, I managed to squeeze in a family session, a maternity session, a full-day wedding, and potentially a birth if baby decides to come before the end of the month. In the month that I told myself I'd take off. HA.

And my birthday is July 31st!

(I decided to limit this to images of only my four kids, without any of their cousins... otherwise this post would have 53 images. No joke.)

02.July.2014 - with Nana and Papa (Peter's parents)

07.July.2014 - family shot at the Diefenbunker

14.July.2014 - picnic on our way down to NY, swimming & sundaes

15.July.2014 - The Strong's Museum of Play, the Lego Store

16.July.2014 - hurricane simulator at the Rochester Science Centre... and a little girl feeling left out

18.July.2014 - a little evening hike in the state park

24.July.2014 - inflatable fun at les jeux de la francophonie

25.July.2014 - traaaaaaain!!

I have so many other images to share from this month, but this will have to suffice. Next in the circle is Annie. Please click through and see what she was up to in July.

Their World, June 2014

June was full. Two birthdays, our 14th wedding anniversary, hot enough weather to finally be in the water, finishing our homeschool year, hours spent at various parks, a visit from Nana and Papa, and a big Spartan Race at the end of the month.

02.June.2014 - Liam opening his birthday presents. Eloise pouting because they weren't for her. *Excuse Andrew's dirty face.

09.June.2014 - Swimming next door. Our neighbours (a retired couple) are so good to us. They've given us a key to their pool and even bring out snacks for the kids every time we go to swim. Spoiled!

18.June.2014 - Liam's Nerf part with friends. I invited two (of my) friends, which meant 13 kids. They had a blast running around the park with a stockpile of 100+ bullets.

22.June.2014 - Trying out the pool at our friends' new home (they're all in there, I promise).

23.June.2014 - End of year homeschool picnic at a nearby lake.

26.June.2014 - Eloise opening her gifts from Nana and Papa and her brothers. We celebrated her birthday a bit late this year, which totally offended her brothers, but she didn't know the difference. She's in love with the 12 vintage Care Bear toys found on Kijiji.

28.June.2014 - Family pictures, post-Spartan Race. I should've had the boys all wear their Spartan shirts and medals, but no one was in the mood for wardrobe changes at this point, in the 40C degree humidity.

Next in the circle is Anika.

Their World, May 2014

The month of May brought warm weather. Finally. The kids are outside so much. Enjoying the yard, the two parks nearby, their bikes, their best-friends-who-will-soon-be-moving, and new neighbours RIGHTNEXTDOOR. Mother's Day was lovely, school is going well (and is almost done!!), and the garden is coming along.

11.May.2014 - Forced into taking Mother's Day pictures. Dirty socks, fingers in noses, and all.

12.May.2014 - A walk in a little ravine near our house. With sticks. Always with sticks.

19.May.2014 - Guest appearance from my older sister's kids during my sans-kids trip back to Regina.

20.May.2014 - I got to meet my new niece! And I hadn't seen my nephew since he was about 4 months old.

27.May.2014 - More fun at the park. I'm so, so, so glad the weather has warmed up.

From a bike ride later that same day. They're like a little gang.

It's not always easy to find the time (or the motivation) to pull out my camera and get some pictures of all four kids together. Especially when they seem to always have better things to do... and I always have loads of client work waiting for me on my computer. So I'm thankful to have a group of women pushing me forwards with this little project.

If you'd like to see what some of the others were up to this month, then next in line is Annie.

Their World, April 2014

A couple of iPhone shots this month: puddle jumping, and dragging the kids to do our civic duty (i.e, vote).

We were back to the Science Museum with cousins this month, enjoyed a neighbourhood Easter egg hunt, and then a scavenger hunt at home. There were no clues down daddy's shirt.

A good month.

Voting is FUUUUUUUN!!

Our trips to the Science Museum are becoming almost monthly events. This time we had the kids' second cousins tag along.

Neighbourhood egg hunting.

Elaborate easter hunt that took hours to plan (write the clues, organize the clues, hide the clues, etc) and all of 10 minutes to complete. Not sure why Andrew looks so sad in this first one!

Sarah is next in the loop. You don't want to miss her little guy in his Superman undies.

Their World, February 2014

Another month with a fair bit of illness in our house. I'm sick and tired of it (see what I did there?). I'm really hoping that warmer weather and more vitamin D will improve our chances. This month saw lots of reading, lots of playing, lots of days spent in pyjamas (or "jothes" as Simon calls them... jammies + clothes = jothes), lots of learning and schooling (and some tears shed), and yet more snow.

We also celebrated Valentine's Day with a few friends. In our case, a "few" was 25 kids and 6 moms. I love throwing parties and making these days special for the kids. There are so many benefits to homeschooling, but there are also some fun parts of school that I don't want them to miss out on. I hope their childhood is full of memories of happy times like these.

01.29.2014 - Reading. Not all four kids, but 3 kids + 2 kittens. Good enough.

01.30.2014 - Simon and Andrew consented to play Little People with Eloise. She was one happy little girl.

02.02.2014 - Playing outside. An elusive smile from the 10 year old; swings and big jumps for the others.

02.07.2014 - Watching the Olympic opening ceremonies.

02.13.2014 - From our Valentine's Day party. 4 kids + 2 kittens. Win.

02.22.2014 - Saturday morning screen time. The kids get an hour on the weekends (and then spend the rest of their time begging/scheming/working for more). Kittens are both present. Peter was working. The pile of laundry to be folded is representative of me. ;)

There are 10 lovely ladies participating in the circle, the next one is Ruthie from Fairy Wings and Dinosaurs, with her FIVE have a little tea party. Wonder if I can convince the boys to have tea with Eloise this afternoon...?

Their World, January 2014

"Their World" is a project that I've joined with some other moms/photographers/bloggers, with the goal of capturing our children, together, doing what they normally do. In their world.

I want photos of all four of them together.

Doing what they do.

I spend so much time photographing other families, put so much care into editing the images, and so much effort into telling their stories. I want to be more deliberate in photographing my own children and recording their stories.

Our stories.

I blogged all of, what, three times last year? It makes me cry to think of all the little frustrating and funny and sweet and wonderful moments that I didn't record. But this is a new year and I think this project is exactly what I need to motivate/push/force me to blog.

Since I didn't join this circle until last week, I'll be reaching back to the end of last year for my first two images, but then my goal will be to post one image from each week. One image with all four kids.

I will award myself bonus points for getting either or both kittens in a shot.

big snow - 12.20.2013

Christmas Eve - 12.24.2013

Andrew's family birthday, 5 years old (and the beginnings of H1N1 for Liam) - 01.03.2014

Andrew's party with friends... and Grandma (who brings gifts for everyone) - 01.20.2014

Villa de Leyva, the grand finale

If you've missed the initial six-post-long photo bomb of our trip north of Bogota, here are the previous posts from our trip to Villa de Leyva over Easter/Spring break:

  • swimming

  • part I (Villa de Leyva at night and our hotel)

  • part II (the Ostrich Farm)

  • part III (Dinosaur Park, more swimming and one of the best pizza joints in Colombia)

  • part IV (Villa de Leyva Plaza Mayor, family pictures)

  • part V (lemonades and lattes on the plaza)

  • Since I recognize the very real chance that you're all bored beyond words of all the pictures from this trip, I'll keep this post low on narration. These are mostly pictures of the colonial architecture that Villa de Leyva is known for -notably the church- along with a few shots of some of the people.

    * * * * * * * * * *

By the time we were done our little coffee break at the plaza while waiting for the shops to open, the sun was out and blazing, the square was filling up... and the boys were cranky and in no mood to shop. So Peter took the three of them up to the car while I head a few blocks over to the yarn shop I'd been anxious to peak into.

The wool and other fibre in that store were incredible! All hand carded, spun and dyed. Amazing stuff. They sold many hand-knitted items (some drool-worth sweaters, bags and rugs) as well as the yarn itself. I'd chosen several balls of yarn to buy, with dreams of sweet baby girl knitted things swirling away in my head. The  problem was that none of the skeins were priced. All were weighed on a somewhat sketchy and not-so-accurate looking hanging scale.

I also have GRINGO practically stamped across my forehead.

Luckily (it turns out), my credit card wouldn't work when I went to pay... good thing, since the total was around $400! Yikes. I'm thinking providence saved me from getting more than a wee bit ripped off there as I hadn't chosen that much wool, but would've had no way to "argue" the price with them. I still thinking longingly back to that amazing wool, but am thankful to have not gotten fleeced (*snort*).

    * * * * * * * * * * * *

I met up with Peter and the boys, we said goodbye to Villa de Leyva and hit the road in search of the pottery town of Raquira.

    We had a map.

    We had a GPS.

    We still got lost.

And we got stuck behind these guys...

Villa de Leyva day 3 -99

Villa de Leyva day 3 -98

After a 40 minute detour of sorts, we did manage to get on the proper highway, headed in the proper direction, and eventually made it to Raquira. By this time, the boys were tired, hungry, even crankier, and not at all interested in getting out a poking around shops. Even amazing shops like the ones lining the streets of this neat little town.

So I got all of 20 minutes to race around with my camera and snap some shots while half-heartedly looking for a sandwich shop or something similar. In the end, I did get some interesting pictures, but only got to buy a Pepsi and a lemonade.

People, I could've spent a whole day wandering around this place. *sigh* But the boys had all come down with bad colds while we were in Villa de Leyva and they just really needed to get home. Their needs came first.

    I'm such a good mom.

Cause seriously, check out this place!

This concludes our trip to Villa de Leyva. I'll return you to your regularly scheduled blog full of stories of my kids supreme silliness, complaints about this awful cold (that threatens to be with me until the end of this pregnancy... or the end of time), belly pics and anxiety over name choice.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.

seeing Colombia: Villa de Leyva part IV

That's right folks. Not done yet.

    Not by a long shot.

If you missed the first several instalments, I'm happy to provide these handy links:

    * * * * * * * * * * * *

This is taken from "part I" of our Villa de Leyva trip:
Villa de Leyva (full name Nuestra Senora de la Villa Santa Maria de Leyva - rolls off the tongue doesn't it?) is a small town with a population of about 9000 people and is a place where time seems to stand still. The streets are still cobbled*, the walls still whitewashed, and the architecture is pure colonial. It was declared a National Monument in 1954 in order to preserve its unique architecture.
The town centres around the main square -Plaza Mayor- which is supposedly the largest in South America at 120m by 120m. It's completely cobbled and almost completely devoid of any decoration except the fountain in the centre. I don't know if it was this lack of ornamentation that would otherwise help with perspective, but it didn't seem that big! Although I've only been to Plaza Simon Bolivar here in Bogota once (during a tour of the Christmas lights when it was PACKED with throngs of people), surely this plaza in tiny Villa de Leyva can't be bigger... but can Wikipedia and Lonely Planet be wrong??
Either way, it was definitely an interesting place to visit... either at night in the rain for a much-later-than-usual supper (with three cranky, starving boys) or during the late morning for a much-needed latte and lemonades while we waited for the shops to open. It's surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bars, shops carrying artisanal goods, some small hotels and the plain-yet-impressive Iglesia Parroquial and is the main thoroughfare for much of Villa de Leyva's foot traffic. So great people watching!
And finally, on our last day in Villa de Leyva, the timing AND THE WEATHER came together so we could actually walk around the town a bit. It was a Friday and we were out pretty early, so we had to wait a bit for all the shops to open. To kill time, we walked around the square, took pictures, took some more pictures, and stopped for the afore mentioned latte and some lemonades.

As you'll see from the pictures, the theme of terracotta tiled roofs, whitewashed walls and dark green trim is repeated throughout the town. Villa de Leyva is also known for its balconies, courtyards, and cobbled streets.

    And stray dogs.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -83Villa de Leyva day 3 -82

I couldn't resist posing the boys in front of this great old door. Notice the '12-24' address above the frame? Remind me to tell you about the address system here in Colombia some day. At first I found it a bit confusing, but now I love it. Genius.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -81Villa de Leyva day 3 -80

Villa de Leyva day 3 -79

Because of the rain and the cobbled streets and the lack of underground drainage/sewer system, all of the doors were two or three steps up off the street. Andrew and Simon HAD to climb up and over every. single. set. of stairs we passed.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -78Villa de Leyva day 3 -77

Until daddy took matters into his own hands...

    Literally.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -76

While the main store I was hoping to look in (a yarn store!) wasn't open, there were a few other shops I was able to peak into. As you can see, the boys were really into shopping...

Villa de Leyva day 3 -75

I love this picture of the terracotta tiles waiting to be installed. It is so Colombia to me.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -74

    AND FINALLY THE SQUARE ITSELF!

See? Does it look that big to you? I guess it does if you have nothing to compare it to... I'll have to take my mom to Plaza Simon Bolivar when she's here (in a few weeks!) so we can compare.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -73

Check out the cobbled stones. I can't tell you how many times the boys tripped and fell walking through the plaza. The roads in the town are no smoother. Driving around was not terribly comfortable at almost 33 weeks pregnant and each car ride was one loooong Braxton Hicks contraction. I guess if this baby girl is looking like she's going to be late, I'll know where to go!

Villa de Leyva day 3 -66

Villa de Leyva day 3 -45

I know these two pictures are essentially the same, but I like them both.

    And it's my blog.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -68

Since Liam took the two pictures above, I couldn't very well tell Simon he couldn't have a turn. It's only been recently that he's even showed any interest in my camera, so I have to be careful when I let Liam use it. Not only is there the risk of Simon dropping it, but it's also far too heavy for him to hold up to his eye while concentrating on the shutter. All the pictures end up tilted. He also takes about four frames per second from the moment it's laid in his grubby little paws...

Villa de Leyva day 3 -62
not quite following the rule of thirds, but not bad

Villa de Leyva day 3 -61
more centered this time (probably to get the dog in the shot)

Villa de Leyva day 3 -60
    okay, Simon, that's enough!

And then a few timer shots... since someone has pregnancy brain and forgot to bring the remote. Clearly sprinting across treacherously uneven cobblestone when in the third trimester of pregnancy is far more fun and efficient...

Villa de Leyva day 3 -58

Villa de Leyva day 3 -59

I'm not sure if I like the black & white or colour version better.

While we were checking the playback to see if any of the shots were keepers, we noticed that the fountain looked like a big sombrero... and SINCE WE'RE SO COOL, we had to take a couple shots with Peter wearing said sombrero... and despite the looks on Liam and Simon's faces, they thought it was pretty funny.

Villa de Leyva day 3 -14Villa de Leyva day 3 -13

I have over 100 pictures just from these few hours spent in and around the square in Villa de Leyva, but I think these 29 are enough for one post.

Tune in next time for More Silly Boys, More Columns and Cobblestone, and An Old Man On A Bench...
