*TMBG = They Might Be Giants

They Might Be Giants are this weird, quirky indie rock band... that also happens to make some really cool kids music. Although I deleted the songs about "my brother the monkey" and the one that lumps angels and unicorns together (*snort*), the rest of their songs from the album "Here Comes Science" are really great. The music is super and so NOT annoying, and the lyrics are really clever and all about, well, science. All of the links above will take you to that song's music video, but I'll share a few here to whet your appetite.

Liam's favourite, "Why Does the Sun Shine":

Simon's favourite, "I am a Palaeontologist":

And now MY favourite (one of many), "Nonagon":

TMBG also have an album called "Here Come the A-B-C's" that I think I'll have to check out. Anyone have good recs for kids music? The main requirement is that it has to have a good beat. My boys have to be able to dance or rock out to it or I'll be greeted with choruses of "SKIP!'

  1. I loooooove TMBG. I have many of their adult albums, and yet none of their kids' albums. I must fix that, and soon!

I once saw them in concert and they pulled me up on stage to take a personal request. Definitely an A+ day, that one.

I do have the EP of Why Does the Sun Shine -- it is a cover from an album of science songs that one of the guys in the band had as a kid. I wonder if their "here comes science" album is a complete remake of that whole other album. In any case, I love the sun shine song. The first guy ever to win $1000000 on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire did it with a question about how far away the sun is from earth. I knew it was 96 million miles away (and that's why it looks so small) from the TMBG song. If only I'd been in the hot seat!

My kids are really into the Beatles these days and we are listening to their "1" album all the time in the car. In terms of kids' stuff, I'd recommend the "For The Kids" set (I think there is 1, 2 and 3) and the Barenaked Ladies' "Snacktime." We also all love Dan Zanes -- he has many kids' albums. We have Rocket Ship Beach and House Party and both are great.

My my, I sure am chatty today, no?

And Lynn, I know a lot more about the sun than I ever would have if it hadn't been for that song too! :)
