Works For Me Wednesday: Star Wars party

As previously mentioned, Liam will be having a Lego Clone Wars birthday party in a few weeks. Knowing I'm not the only mother of Star Wars obsessed boys, I thought I'd share a few ideas and links.

HERE is the invitation I made for the party. To make it, I pieced together five or six different screen shots from the comic on starwars.lego.com.

For games, I'm planning to buy some blue, green and red pool noodles ($1.93 each), cut them in half and wrap the bottoms in black and silver tape. Like this:

We'll make a Death Star pinata, then paint a stick blue or green with more black and silver tape on the bottom like a lightsaber to use to bash it with.

Maybe play kickball with this:
not my kid

These inflatable Death Star beach balls are currently available at Walmart (I know, I know, but a necessary evil in this case) for under $6.00 . I thought we could even use the pool noodle lightsabers as bats to play baseball with it. Might be funny.

Walmart is also carrying some Clone Wars kites for $2.93. These will be the party favours in place of a little goodie bag full of candy and junky toys. There are Yoda ones and ones featuring Captain Rex. The cost for 1 kite plus half-a-pool-noodle lightsaber will be around $3.89 per child.
(There are also some C-R-A-Z-Y 3D Star Wars kites. An X-wing, Millennium Falcon and a Tie Interceptor. But they're $39.99! Yikes.)

There are tons of ideas here including invitations, decorations, themed food, games and cake ideas. Although it's more geared towards the idea of a Jedi Training party, there are some great ideas.

At one point, Hallmark had a line of Clone Wars party supplies. I'm not sure if they are still available, not that we'd be buying them if they did. I can't justify the expense for something disposable like that. Cute, but bad for the wallet AND the earth.

This site has a lot of ideas for a more general Lego themed party, and this site is full of links to Star Wars detailed descriptions of Star Wars parties for different age groups (warning: some area a little crazy... hiring actors dressed up in authentic Star Wars costumes to deliver invitations and be at the party? Whoa.)

Now the cake.

I have BIG PLANS for the cake.

Using this site and its instructions as a starting point (check it out, the R2D2 cake is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. and almost life size), I'm planning on making a cake replica of Commander Fox:

I realize this is fairly ambitions and likely to fail, but I'm going to give it a try. I'll use the same rice crispy carving method that the baker used for R2D2's legs (in the link above) to make any of the chiseled parts (legs, hands, visor), the rest will be cake covered in fondant. To make it safe for Simon, I'll be making the rice crispy cake using coconut oil, coconut oil icing in place of buttercream icing, and marshmallow fondant in white, grey, red and black.

Am I completely crazy??

I just hope I can pull it off. The look on Liam's face will make it totally worth it.. He was fighting back tears two years ago at his 4th birthday when he saw this cake I made for him (and it's pretty ghetto in comparison to what I have planned):
Hopefully some of these ideas will inspire other great birthday parties for little Jedi everywhere.

Need some party supplies? Want to make your own pool noodle lightsabers? Check these links below and have it all delivered to your door. If you find any of these links are broken or sold out, let me know and I'll find some new sources. Wouldn't the minifigure ice cube trays be fun? They could be used for ice (obviously), chocolate, or even to make Lego man crayons!

  4. Ooh, love the cake! The R2D2 one you made looks awesome! I did an R2D2 cake for my hubby for his Star Wars themed 30th b-day this last year and it was a LOT of work. Good luck! And I LOVE the noodle sabers! Or light noodles? Just awesome!

I looked at your invites as well and they are gorgeous! Your son is lucky to have such a cool mom!

  5. The only way that cake could be any better is if Kenny Baker himself burst out of it and did a striptease.
