I was featured!

One of my pictures was features on I {heart} Faces today for their Fix-It Friday!

Before you get too excited and start throwing out "Congratulations!", know that Fix-It Fridays are for pictures that, while good in the sense of composition or lighting or some other element, have some clear and obvious flaws. The picture of mine that was chose was one of Simon that, like most pictures of Simon, needed some touching up because of his skin.

(When Simon has an allergic reaction to a given food, the most noticeable symptom is that the skin all around his mouth and chin first turns bright red, the dries up and peels off in big flaky pieces. No creamy, smooth toddler skin for him! The picture used over at I {heart} Faces is one that was taken not long after a pretty severe reaction. I think it might have been before we realized that he was allergic to soy (even though the allergist had said it was fine so we'd been giving him soy yogurt because of his dairy allergy). I'm glad I trusted my mother's intuition and cut soy out of his diet.

Mother's intuition 1, allergist 0.
Okay, to be fair, I guess she did get a few right...)

original for fix-it fridays

If you're curious to see what the talented folks at I {heart} Faces did with this picture of Simon, check out this post. Being relatively new to post-processing, I'm blown away by how amazing some of them made his skin. Seriously blown away.

  1. Congrats! And those are some nice pics they did! Wow. I haven't bothered to modify pics that much yet, so I have a lot to learn!

  2. How cool! Mind you, that was a great shot SOOC, but it's amazing to see what a little post-production can do, isn't it? I really have to learn to do more!

  4. This was a lovely shot to begin with, but I am blown away at the things people were able to do to it. How do they get to be such experts?

  5. Thank you so much! He is a cutie! I {heart} faces has taught me a lot; I love learning from other people :-) I'm so glad I could help you, please let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with- I'm no expert, but I like trying new things.

  6. You were so sweet to comment on my version of your photo. It's a great photo! Yeah, I do all my editing in the free version of Picnik. I don't do any fancy "up this color by this percent, change this color..." or patching certain pixels with other pixels. Too much work! I do LOVE the reverse soften (and the blemish remover) tool! They make a big impact and they are easy. I just went back and edited a bunch of pictures from when my daugther was in infant... especially some from when she had baby acne. I didn't use the blemish remover, but I did use the reverse soften tool on her skin. Oh my gosh - it made a HUGE difference. The new photos looked great. I couldn't believe it. It did leave a little variation in color, which I actually liked so she didn't look totally fake. But, it wasn't blotchy or harsh. I also like taking a photo with some really strong (too strong) colors and putting it to about 5-10% sepia (mostly color). It really just knocks out the distracting bit. I'm pretty new to photography and post-processing, and these tricks have been my greatest find! I did just learn how to rotate photos (thanks to Fix it Friday), and that's a pretty cool feature too.

    Good luck to you!!

  7. @Sab Do you have a photo editing program? I'm too, um, cheap to spring for Photoshop, so use Gimp. Do a google search. It's pretty good, and I've seen some neat edits done in Picnik, too.

@Heather You recognized him? Too funny. Do you ever play at I heart faces? I really enjoy it.

@Lynn I know, eh? Post processing really is fun though. I almost enjoy it as much as taking the pictures themselves.

@Erin I've learned a ton from that site too. Love, love, love it!

@Kellie I heard about Picnik a loooooong time ago, but never really looked into it. It looks fun and really user friendly. When I edit pictures, I often forget to even think about the rotate tool. I need to get in the habit of using it more.

    Thanks for all your comments!
